Il est né le 14 juin 1902 à Andrinople/ Edirne en Turquie.
Dans les années 20, il est venu en France pour faire ses études à Paris avec son frère, Sabato.
Pour leur père, Meshulam Bassan, il était important que ses fils acquièrent une bonne éducation.
Ils ont étudié à la Sorbonne, mais ils ont aussi eu beaucoup de plaisir dans les clubs dansants de l'époque comme le Mikado et la Coupole.
Pepo aimait le Tango et les jolies femmes. Il aimait fumer, rire et danser.
Le 26 octobre 1931, à Saint-Brieuc, en Bretagne, il est devenu le père de Michel Bassan, mon grand-père.
Il s'est marié avec Marie Béhar, mon arrière-grand-mère, le 4 décembre 1936.
J'aurais aimé savoir plus de choses sur cet homme beau et souriant que je regarde sur toutes les photos.
Mais malheureusement, mon grand-père parlait peu de lui, le souvenir trop vite terni par la guerre et la mort. Il avait seulement 10 ans quand son père est mort.
Pepo est mort un mois avant de fêter son quarantième anniversaire, dans un minuscule village de province sans histoire, sans passé, sans avenir. Dans ce village de la Sarthe, Ecommoy, de nombreux juifs de Bretagne se sont retrouvés déracinés, en résidence surveillée, sans savoir ce que le futur leur réservait.
Le 5 mars 1940, il fut naturalisé français par décret alors qu'il demeurait à Saint-Brieuc au 36 bis rue du Port. Mon grand-père avait alors 8 ans.
Il fut ensuite mobilisé le 22 mai 1940 et affecté à la 11ème Section-5ème artillerie à Vannes.
Le 16 octobre 1940, il fut recensé en tant qu'israélite ainsi que toute sa famille.
Le 6 décembre 1940 fut ordonné la fermeture administrative du magasin et la saisie du stock
de marchandises.
En avril 1942, il quitta Saint-Brieuc avec sa famille. Officiellement, ils étaient "refoulés" de Saint-Brieuc.
Ils sont arrivés à Ecommoy le 14 avril 1942.
Du 14 au 30 avril, Pepo était obligé de venir pointer 3 fois par jour à la mairie.
Pepo, sa femme Marie et son Michel Michel habitaient 22 rue de la Gare à Écommoy.
Pepo est décédé le 16 mai 1942 à Ecommoy.
Un mois après leur arrivée.
La version officielle, apportée le 16 août 1947 par un médecin, soit 5 ans après sa mort, parle d'une crise d'angine.
Un doute subsiste dans mon esprit...

Pepo Bassan was my great-grand-father.
He was born the 14th of June 1902 in Andrinople/ Edirne in Turkey.
In the 1920's, he came to France to study in Paris with his brother Sabato. For their father, Meshulam Bassan, it was very important that his sons acquire a good education.
They studied at La Sorbonne, but they also had a lot of fun in the dancing clubs called Le Mikado and La Coupole.
Pepo liked to tango and he liked pretty ladies. He liked to smoke, laugh and dance.
The 26th of october 1931, he became the father of Michel Bassan, my grand-father.
He married Marie Béhar, my great-grand-mother, the 4th of december 1936.
I wish I knew more about that handsome, smiling man. Each time I look at the pictures of him, he looked so happy.
But my grand-father didn't talk much about his father, his memories turned dark by the war and his father gone too soon. He was only ten years old when his dad died.
Pepo died one month short before his 40th birthday, in a very small, uneventful village, with no past and no future. In this village of la Sarthe, Ecommoy, a lot of Jewish people from Brittany were on house arrest, uprooted, without knowing what the future hold for them.
The 5th of march 1940, he was granted the French citizenship. He was then living in Saint-Brieuc, a little town on the West Coast of France.
On the 16th of october 1940, he was declared "Israelite", as well as all his family.
The 6th of december 1940, the family shop was officially closed and all the merchandise was ceased by the police.
In April 1942, he left Saint-Brieuc with his family. They were officially banned from their hometown.
They arrived in Ecommoy the 14th of April 1942.
From the 14th to the 30th of april, Pepo had to check in at the city hall three times a day.
Pepo, his wife Marie Behar and their son lived 22 rue de la Gare in Ecommoy.
Pepo died the 16th of may 1942, only a month after they arrived in Ecommoy.
In this official report of the doctor, delivered 5 years later, it reads that he had a heard attack.
But I still have a doubt about it...
